H.C. Shipping & Chartering
H.C. Shipping & Chartering was established on 1st November 1997 by Mark Collins and Mark Harrison and in association with Clarksons plc. Mark Collins and Mark Harrison, both experienced short sea brokers, had decided they needed a fresh challenge and Clarksons, despite being one of the worlds biggest shipbrokers had no presence in the wide and varied short sea market. What better solution than to join forces and form H.C SHIPPING & CHARTERING LTD.
This provided the opportunity for the two brokers to enter the short sea arena with the formidable backing of Clarksons whilst at the same time providing the latter with the opportunity of adding short sea chartering to it’s already impressive portfolio. The company is now in its 19th year of trading and has steadily built its activity and reputation over that period.
After working initially from a small rented office in Hull city centre, in 2005 the company purchased an 18th century Georgian town house in picturesque Prince Street (pictured) situated in the old town and from where it is now based.
In February 2011 HC established a new branch office in Rotterdam headed up on a permanent basis by Kristian Barford, and in July 2015 the company celebrated the conclusion of its 13,000th fixture.
H.C Shipping and Chartering Ltd. prides itself on professionalism. Both Mark Harrison and Mark Collins are qualified shipbrokers, a fellow and a member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers respectively. The team was further strengthened in January 2003 by the arrival of Rob Fitz-John, also a fellow of the Institute (who retired after 10yrs service in 2014) and in 2004 when Kristian Barford joined the team (now based in our Dutch office)
We take our profession seriously. If you need legal advice it is sensible to speak to a qualified lawyer and so if you want to charter a ship you would be well advised to speak to a qualified shipbroker for exactly the same reasons.
The company specialises in the short sea market in sizes from 1000 up to about 25000 mts and in all types of dry cargo commodities including Steel, Coal, Animal feed, Fertilizer, Sugar, Grain, Scrap and project cargoes. Our area of trade is predominantly Northern Europe, the Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea but it is not limited to those areas and increasingly includes Transatlantic, US Gulf/Eastern Seaboard, Africa and Pacific.
Since the company’s formation the volume of business we handle has increased year on year. We are actively involved in all areas of the short sea market on a daily basis and consider ourselves well placed to constantly adapt in an ever fragmenting and diversifying business.
The Chartering department has almost 90 years worth of combined experience and over this time we have accumulated an enormous amount of knowledge. We think it is useful that we can share our practical experience and expertise in the numerous trades you now see us operating in.
We feel our company must now rank amongst the strongest in it’s field. Perhaps unsurprisingly we believe that the shipbroker has an important role to play. That role is constantly evolving but we are experienced enough to recognise that we have to add value to the equation and we will continue to adapt to meet the ever changing needs of our customers.
That’s who we are and what we do. We would be delighted to hear from you.

Short Sea Market Reports
Some time ago we realised there was a genuine demand for data and information on the short sea market but a conspicuous lack of any available to which end we started writing a weekly market report which we later enhanced by creating our own short sea index. For a small annual subscription HC can supply these reports on a weekly basis (examples of which are shown below) which provide a useful snapshot of current market conditions and developing trends together with historical data illustrated by graphs showing fluctuations in the short sea index and fuel prices. H.C. Shipping is one of the few short-sea brokers supplying such a service. If you are interested in subscribing please fill in the form opposite.
